Baby Formula Lawsuits for Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)
Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe intestinal illness, most common in babies born prematurely or underweight. Several recent studies have surfaced showing a link between specific brands of cow-based baby formulas given to premature and underweight newborns and the development of this life-threatening illness. NEC is caused by bacteria from cow’s milk that attacks the walls of babies intestine – which are most commonly weakened when babies are born prematurely or underweight – and causes infection and inflammation and can result in the deterioration of the intestinal wall.
Symptoms of NEC include:
- Loss of appetite
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Abdominal swelling
- Abnormal breathing
- Change in heart rate or blood pressure
- Lack of weight gain
